Operation Hospital Food returns for a third series this week as James continues his campaign to improve the food served in hospitals by attempting to bring about change on a national scale.
Throughout the series James visits numerous hospitals and works with NHS leaders, staff, patients and nutritionists. His first stop is Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, Essex, where an overspend has put the catering team in jeopardy.
James also invites hospital chefs to his home and devises a plan to benefit patients and care givers. He also investigates food on children’s wards and works with Royal Oldham Hospital to help provide food that young patients will enjoy.
Not content with tackling food in hospitals James also helps set up a new initiative in Chesterfield to help old people returning home after being discharged from hospital and tours an NHS food production plant.
There’s also the chance to catch up with some familiar faces as James revisits some of the sites he has helped previously to see if his ideas have made a difference.
Finally, James meets NHS representatives in an attempt to persuade them to change their current cooking practices and adopt his recommendations. Tune in to see if his ideas were given the go ahead.

The Junior Bake Off hits our screens today and James is judging the efforts of thirty-two young bakers along with Great British Bake Off favourite Mary Berry.
The first episode sees four contestants follow a difficult recipe for biscotti and lemonade and create amazing racing-themed cakes, before James and Mary select one to go through to the semi-final.
If that sounds difficult, it doesn’t stop there! In the coming weeks the contestants will turn their hands a variety of different recipes including to chocolate fondant, marble cake, ‘melting moment’ biscuits and rock cakes as well as the infamous showstopper and technical challenges.
James said ‘It was a real honour to spend the summer judging the baking efforts of such a talented group of young people alongside Mary. The standard of the contestants was outstanding, I think viewers will be really impressed and inspired to try some of the recipes at home’

Chef James Martin joins Jackie Stewart on a road trip through the Alps in a classic supercar to retrace the life and career of the three-time Formula One world champion. Self-confessed motor-racing fanatic James then discovers how Jackie’s relentless safety crusade lives on in the vehicles of today and faces the challenge of driving one of his Grand Prix-winning cars around the Monza circuit in northern Italy.
Following the shock closure of the Alea Casino and the Leeds Kitchen on Monday I have been
in talks with the owners(London Clubs International) to understand in full the circumstances and the decision making process

United Cakes of America
I’m really excited about the next 24hrs as I’ve got two new programmes starting that are very different but that I’m equally proud of.
Tonight sees the start of United Cakes of America on the Good Food Channel. I had a challenging time driving a 1980’s Cadillac across the country stopping off along the way to meet some amazing people and to sample their best cake recipes and food. You can read more stuff about it on The Good Food blog.
Travelling a bit closer to home and revisiting a subject I’m really passionate about is Operation Hospital Food which starts at 9.15am on BBC One tomorrow. This time I’m in Birmingham tackling the issue of poor hospital food. I really believe good food can be like a medicine to patients which is why it’s so important for us to get it right. Scarborough and the team there have gone onto to do amazing things and all at no extra cost. Better still the restaurant is now a destination and Pat’s Place is on the culinary map. I recently did an interview with Good Housekeeping magazine which you can read here.
