The Leeds Kitchen announces official opening date

Following months of anticipation, celebrity chef James Martin has announced the official opening date for his new UK restaurant. The Leeds Kitchen, situated at the Alea Casino in Clarence Dock, is set to open to the public on Saturday 9 April 2011, serving best of British cuisine with a twist.

The fine dining over 18’s eatery, previously known as ‘The Fig’, has been transformed into a beautiful, contemporary restaurant by Yorkshire based Interior Designer Carolyn Parker. Along with her daughter Abby and using only local suppliers, Carolyn has delivered a warm and open design, incorporating some unique pieces reflecting James’ personality.

Having recently had the honour of being made a Yorkshire Patron, James’ new venture has already contributed to the City of Leeds employment drive, with over twenty-five experienced chefs and front of house staff recruited in preparation for opening. As well as the restaurant, James’ team will be responsible for the delivery of catering for all functions within the casinos prestigious events spaces.

“Leeds and Yorkshire is the perfect place for me to open my new restaurant!” Explains James Martin. “With a great young team, both in the kitchen and front of house, we are really looking forward to the opening.

Being a Yorkshire man, it's not hard to understand why the produce is so good in the area and we are going to use it to maximum affect on the menu. James to Open New Leeds Restaurant

Alea Casino, Leeds, is delighted to announce that BBC 1’s celebrity chef James Martin, will be opening his first restaurant in the UK for over 10 years inside their prestigious casino. Situated on Clarence Dock, the best of British eatery aptly named The Leeds Kitchen by James Martin, is scheduled to open towards the end of March 2011.

BSM Silverstone Classic Celebrity Challenge

Silverstone Classic 23rd – 24th – 25th July 2010

I will be taking part in the BSM Silverstone Classic Celebrity Challenge (& hopefully make it through the qualifying!) at Silverstone on the 23rd July racing in a Fiat Arbarth 500, to raise as much as I can for the Bobby Moore Fund. This event is to raise vital funds for one particular project – a clinical trial to improve treatment for bowel cancer that has spread to the liver, called FOXFIRE. The aim is for each celebrity to raise £2000 in sponsorship from fans, friends, family & colleagues, this would more than cover the Bobby Moore Fund’s support of two researchers working on this vital project, for this year; potentially helping to shape the treatment of bowel cancer, & save lives in the future.

Food Standards Agency - Belfast

BALLYMENA STUDENT IS CROWNED ULTIMATE SIXTH FORM SURVIVOR
Joanne Hamill Wins Live Final

James was in Belfast 23/03/10 to host the live final of the Food Standards Agency NI ‘Sixth Form Survivor Challenge.’ Five sixth form students from across the province battled it out in food related challenges in front of a packed audience at the Ulster Museum with Joanne Hamill from Dunclug College in Ballymena taking the ‘Ultimate Sixth Form Survivor’ title.

The live final was a culmination of an online recipe challenge launched in January to encourage students to enter recipes online to win a place in the final. The finalists took part in challenges including an omelette challenge and a James Martin copy cat challenge. As the winner Joanne received £1,000 of home economics equipment for her school, £250 Clockwork Orange and a bespoke award. The four runners up also received £50 Clockwork Orange vouchers along with an award.

The purpose of the ‘Sixth Form Survivor Competition’ was to bring the Food Standards Agency ‘Survival Guide To Food’ to life and encourage sixth form students to learn how to cook and help to communicate important messages such as how to eat healthily on a budget, what to eat during exam time and basic hygiene information.

Elaine Donaghy, Communications Manager, Food Standards Agency Northern Ireland comments: “The ‘Sixth Form Survivor Challenge’ has been a great success resulting in a fantastic, fun event with five finalists and an audience full of teachers and classmates cheering them on. James Martin was a great host and provided lots of entertainment for the young budding chefs. Hopefully the event has inspired sixth formers to think about their own recipes and how to eat healthily. A big congratulations to Joanne Northern Ireland’s ‘Ultimate Sixth Form Survivor.’

Are you "Up for it"

James visited the Huddersfield Student Union to prove to students that you can make a cheap and healthy meal in less time than it takes to get a takeaway. A load of students from across Kirklees gathered at the Union to watch James compete against the clock to create a delicious and healthy alternative to a takeaway before it arrived.

The event was another exciting part of 'Up For It', a campaign which has brought fun and entertainment to students from Kirklees, to show them that healthy cooking can be fun and anyone can do it!

The cookery event was a fun and interactive experience that allowed students to get involved and try different dishes whilst getting inspiration for their own dinner parties. The students also had the opportunity to sign up for the next stage of the campaign, a Come Dine with Me challenge, where they can win a prize of £500 cash.

Lynne Cliffe, project manager of Up For It, said: “We’re delighted that James was able to come to Huddersfield as part of our Up For It campaign. James showed the students that cooking can be easy and fun and something to experiment with. We’re thrilled with the turn out and glad that the students had such a great day!”

The Really Naked Calendar!

Using x-ray technology, the National Osteoporosis Society has joined forces with artist and photographer Nick Veasey to increase awareness of the bone disease and raise funds.

Forsyth is seen striking his famous pose with his clenched fist raised and the calendar reveals the bones in his arm. And Parky's wedding ring is still visible as his left hand is shown through an x-ray.

His fellow Strictly Come Dancing star Craig Revel Horwood has also taken part, along with Joan Rivers, Lorraine Kelly, James Martin and Gold Olympians Dame Tanni Grey Thompson and Steve Williams.

The ‘Really Naked Calendar’ is part of Love Your Bones, a campaign by the charity to raise awareness of the steps people can take in younger years to increase their chances of bone health as they age.

Osteoporosis is one of the most common diseases in the UK, affecting one in two women and one in five men at some point throughout their lives. Veasey said: "Before I got involved in this project I had believed osteoporosis to be a frail old woman's disease - which I'm pretty sure is what the population seem to think too. Well it's not - it's hugely common in men and women of all ages and is a painful and debilitating disease.

This is why I'm pleased to work on this project. The inspiration for the collection of images was to peer beyond the sometimes superficial celebrity image, highlighting that beauty is more than skin deep, and that essentially, what we all share is the need to care for our bones inside. By revealing the bones of these well known people I'm trying to raise awareness of osteoporosis and what we can all do to look after our bones."

First of all, as some of you know, I lost one of my best mates Darren 2 weeks ago, leaving an amazing wife and two young boys. 600 bikers turned up for his funeral last week which was great as he was an amazing and popular bloke.

The demo's will be about 1 hour long with drinks and a signed cook book for all taking part, there are 2 time options available, on Sunday the 17th Aug its 3 until 4pm, the other dates are 6 until 7pm, after each show the deli will be open for another hour so you can browse at your leisure.

Talented students crowned young chef champions by james martin

The 2007 search to find England’s gifted young chefs of the future is over! Five pupils, aged 11 – 16, have beaten off stiff competition from around the country in a cookery challenge to take the title of Quality Standard beef mince Young Chef Champion.

The challenge was launched by the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) in 2006. Now in its second year, the competition aims to inspire youngsters to get cooking and encourage them to take an interest in food and healthy eating. Students from Key Stages 3 & 4 were asked to submit their own original Quality Standard beef mince recipe. Along with a timeplan and budget breakdown.

Entries flooded in from all across the country and after whittling it down to 43 regional finalists, five tense cook-offs took place around the country. The students were each given just one hour to prepare and cook their dishes, which were created on a strict budget of £10. Their cooking skills and final dishes were put to the test and by judges James Martin, celebrity chef and Denise Spencer-Walker, Food Advisor from EBLEX.

Five regional winners worthy of 1st place Young Chef Champion title were selected.
The winners include:

London heat:
Lily Nichols from Alec Hunter Humanities College in Braintree Essex, for her Mexican Lasagne with Stuffed Tomatoes

Leeds heat:
Daisy Cox from Prince Henrys Grammar School in Otely, for her Beef Enchiladas with Chocolate

Midlands heat:
Vitor Zanatta (pictured) from Ludlow Church of England School in Shropshire, for his Stuffed Polenta

Bristol heat:
Amelia Lyons from Chew Valley School in Bristol, for her Stuffed Pancakes

Reading heat:
Nicole Rollet-Marus from Garth Hill College in Bracknell for her Meatball Sundae

James Martin and Quality Standard’s ‘Beefy’ character presented the winners with professional chef whites and signed certificates confirming their status as a Young Chef Champions as well as £200 worth of school equipment vouchers.

James Martin commented: “A huge congratulations to all the winners! They all scored top marks for producing an original, nutritious dish that was fantastically presented. All the contestants were passionate and knowledgeable and it was a difficult choice to select the final five. The great thing about this challenge is it encourages youngsters to really think about their food. For the second year running I’ve been thoroughly impressed by the level of talent and passion expressed by the students and am sure we have not seen the last of these gifted individuals! ”

James Martin is encouraging schools, parents and students to take part in the Quality Standard beef mince Young Chef Challenge to further the cooking skills of a new generation.

Following a successful first year the Quality Standard beef mince Young Chef Challenge is back and this year the challenge has received double the amount of registrations from schools keen to get their pupils involved. Due to the high level of interest the deadlines have now been extended to allow more opportunity for schools, students and parents to get involved in this fantastic and challenging competition!

The free to enter challenge, launched by the English Beef and Lamb Executive (EBLEX) and judged by celebrity chef James Martin, aims to inspire young students to get cooking and take an interest in their food - as well as giving them and their schools the opportunity to win some fantastic prizes!

Schools keen to get involved now have until September 10th to register – simply visit www.bmesonline.org.uk for more information, tips on how to get involved and a registration form. Parents and students, don’t forget to lobby your schools to enter the challenge!

The competition is open to all Food &Technology/Catering GCSE students in Key Stage 3 & 4, so whether you know a budding young chef working towards their Food & Technology/Catering GCSE’s, or someone who is just passionate about cooking, EBLEX want to hear about them!

Once registered schools have until September 28th to submit their original recipes using Quality Standard beef mince. Whether it’s adding a new twist to an old classic or creating something totally new, all recipes must be developed and cooked from scratch. The best entries will be invited to regional cook-off finals judged by James and our top panel of experts.

Prizes up for grabs for each of the regional winners include framed recipes signed by James Martin, £200 worth of school kitchen equipment vouchers, professional chef whites and signed James Martin cook books.

To ensure you are really buying quality beef mince always look out for the Quality Standard Mark. This patchwork fields label can be found on mince beef in supermarkets and independent butchers. The label not only tells you that the meat you are buying has been produced to the strictest guidelines and independent auditing. It also guarantees provenance and assures you that the mince is 100% beef with no added water, additives or fillers, and does not have a fat content over 20%.

Singapore trip

Ocean Village Two, the brand new cruise ship from casual cruise company Ocean Village, became the UK’s first ship to boast two Godmothers when sisters Jodie and Jemma Kidd smashed the bottle on Tuesday 24 April, 2007 in Southampton.

BBC's Great British Village Show - coming soon!

No sooner has James graced our screens with his new cookery show 'Sweet Baby James', we are about to see him again in another new BBC series, titled: The Great British Village Show.

Giles has been buying and selling watches for 20 years and his knowledge has been used extensively in television and magazine articles. His friendship with James comes from a mutual passion for watches, but also for cars and motorcycles where, during the late 1980s, he rode in the British Motorcycle Championships on superbikes.

Saturday Kitchen's Guest from a Land Downunder

My Special Guest on Saturday Kitchen on the 10th March was the singer Jason Donovan. We had a great show and Jason was a fantastic guest to have on the show. He told me afterwards how difficult the famous 'Bush Tucker Trials' where and how he wishes I could have visited them all in the jungle to rustle up something descent to eat!

James shares his love of puddings in this new TV show. He returns to Yorkshire, where he grew up and first started cooking at Castle Howard.
